Nurse Clinics

As an additional service to our registered clients, the practice is now offering free advice via Nurse Clinics for all of the following:

These are all run and staffed by fully qualified veterinary nurses. Appointments can be made via telephone or in person: please ask for a Nurse Clinic Consult. In all clinics, animals will be weighed and given a general health check. Any problems noticed will be referred to a vet for further examination, advice and treatment. Please note that any drugs or services provided, e.g. microchip implant, will be charged for - the consultation and all advice given is free of charge.

Puppy Courses

(see our dog training page)

We now run a special 6 week course to socialise your new puppy. The objective of a puppy course is to help your puppy to realise that the vet's surgery is not an unpleasant place to visit. Puppies that have attended such events are less traumatised by a visit to the vets and react positively to any treatment given; the positive experience the puppy receives during the following five sessions (the first lesson is a two hour course without your puppy) help them to understand calm assertive handling, which makes for a calm and happy patient. Our puppy course also gives our clients an opportunity to discuss any of their problems that any new owner might expect to occur.

The courses are held on Tuesday evening so why not book a place with our receptionist. We charge £48 a small fee, and if you and your puppy complete the course we will microchip your puppy free of charge. Microchiping offers you peace of mind, as a lost puppy can be identified and returned.

New Pet Clinic

This clinic is similar to the puppy and kitten clinic. It is intended for any new owner and provides advice on all aspects of the care of your new pet. The nurse will give the new addition a general health and weight check and be able to answer any general questions you might have.

Nail clipping

We are now offering free nail clipping carried out by the nurse. Dogs, cats, rabbits and guinea pigs can all benefit from a nail clip as well as some other species: if unsure whether a nail clip is appropriate please ask at the front desk. Whilst many owners are comfortable clipping nails themselves, it is a good idea not to cut your pets nails if you are unsure as to what to do as nails contain a very long blood vessel which can bleed for a long while if cut.

Administration of Worming Tablets

This clinic is intended for anybody who struggles to give worming tablets to their pets. Cats are often the most difficult but some dogs can be a handful as well. As well as administering the worming tablet, the nurse will give your pet a general health and weight check. Any drugs supplied are charged for.

Dental Check

Dental hygiene is very important for animals as well as for humans. 70% of dogs and cats have some form of dental disease which, if left untreated, can cause problems for the heart, liver and kidneys. In the dental check your pet will have a thorough examination of its mouth including its teeth, gums and tongue. You will also receive dental care advice appropriate to you and your pet. There are many ways to look after your pets’ teeth including suitable toys, chews, diet and teeth cleaning.

Grooming

The nurse clinics also offer a grooming service for cats, dogs and rabbits. This is not intended to provide a full cosmetic clip: instead the nurse will tidy your pets coat and remove any significantly matted areas. The nurse can also advise on grooming procedures to be carried out at home. The clinic is of particular relevance to rabbits: clipping the hindquarters of rabbits during the summer months can reduce significantly the risk of fly strike by ensuring the area remains clean and making it easier to inspect.

Ear Cleaning

If it has been recommended by your vet that regular ear cleaning is necessary, the nurse will be able to clean and check them for free, as well as performing a general health and weight check. Alternatively, the nurse can demonstrate so that you can confidently clean them at home.
