Seasonal Canine Illness (SCI)

  • A mystery illness seen in dogs having gone to some areas particularly woodlands.
  • Dogs become very ill and, in some cases, die.
  • The most common signs of SCI are sickness, diarrhoea and lethargy.
  • Investigations by Animal Health Trust.

Outbreaks of an acute haemorrhagic vomiting syndrome in cats

  • Unknown cause.
  • Can affect cats of all ages, regardless of their vaccination status.
  • Symptoms include vomiting with blood.

Cases of xylitol poisoning in dogs rise

  • Xylitol is a sweetner being used more frequently in processed foods for human consumption.
  • Dogs are sensitive to xylitol and it causes production of insulin very quickly, which leads to hypoglycaemia (lack of blood sugar).
  • Symptoms Include: weakness, lethargy, depression, seizures, etc.
  • Can be toxic within thirty minutes of eating.
  • Long term can lead to liver failure.
